Measuring Diversity in Canada’s Tech Sector
Benchmarking the representation of various demographic groups within Canada’s tech sector is an important initiative to help the sector track progress on increasing the representation of equity-deserving groups over time.
The Diversity in Tech Dashboard provides an annual benchmark for Canada's tech sector to track its progress on increasing the representation and inclusion of equity-deserving groups within the sector over time.
Data on the diversity of the current Canadian technology employee population is collected by TAP Network members through a confidential employee self-reporting process. This data is then reported to Mercer on a confidential basis through TAP Network's Annual Salary Survey.
Highlights from the 2024 Diversity in Tech Dashboard
Now in its fifth year, almost 200 Canadian tech companies participated in this year’s survey, providing industry wide data on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging policies and practices and employee representation. The dataset continues to grow each year, as more tech companies measure diversity within their workforces.
45% of participating organizations reported that they conduct analyses to identify pay gaps for equity deserving groups, with an additional 32% considering this practice.
The report revealed that women, Indigenous peoples and people with disabilities remain significantly underrepresented in the sector.
- While representation of women increased again this year, women remain underrepresented at 38.6%.
- Indigenous representation in the sector is 0.8% this year, which remains significantly below Canada’s Indigenous population.
- People with disabilities remain significantly underrepresented at 5.2%.
- Representation of people of colour is 33.1%, which is higher than the Canadian census data.
- Representation of people identifying as 2SLGBTQIA+ is 9.9%, which is more than double the Canadian census data.
